Once we had enough people to make the job go easily, we shoveled 4" of clean limestone gravel into the excavated hut subfloor, lay 4" perforated drainage pipe wrapped in a nylon sleeve in a spriral fashion attaching to a rigid 4" Schedule 40 PVC pipe in a south draining ditch which traversed under the tire wall. The waste lines were also plumped into this ditch and up through the gravel layer. |
The backhoe guy pushed as much gravel into the pit without disturbing the drainage pipe and we shoveled the rest. The total layer over and around the pipe came to about 8 inches. |
We then lay rigid 2" insulation over the gravel. |
We covered the insulation with two layers of 6 mm polypropylene plastic and then layers another 2 inches of gravel on it. We will later install a 4" radiant floor concrete slab. |
While the backhoe guy was digging a 2" deep ditch around the outer perimeter of the hut, we spread out the 6mm roll of plastic. We then rolled it from the outer edge up the side of the short tire wall and over the edge to be held inplace with rock. We left a small lip on the outer edge to hold it back from falling into the ditch as well. Finally the drainage pipe was snaked around the ditch. |
We used waste styrofoam from a biotech company to insulate the inner side of the ditch, closest to the hut. |
The earth rammed styrofoam boxes on the inner side of the drain pipe. |
The back fill, finally! We had been working for 3 intense hours to get these crucial waterproofing steps completed. At $75.00/hr, the backhoe guy isn't cheap, but he did help us roll out the plastic and gave us some good pointers. |
Weeks later, the results of many days of rain showed that the drainage system was in fact working and there was very little standing water behind the tire wall where we placed the french drain. |
As we built up the tire walls, we draped the 6 mm poly plastic up and over until the tire wall height exceeded the plastic. Then, we screwed plastic to the top of each tire for eventual burial. (08/03) | ||
